The TRANSFORMERS initiative, supported by ACC as the fiscal sponsor and funded by the DBH Opioid Abatement Funding, unites various collaborating organizations to empower local youth aged 12-24 in Wards 7 & 8. Together, we provide diverse community youth programs that prepare them for a brighter future and help them realize their dreams.
We started meeting at Busboys & Poets MLK in 2019 as a call to action by Andy Shallal to address the violence in our community East of the River. Now we are over 50 organizations strong. Our goal is to unify and work together to provide our youth with the tools, skills, and resources they need to make better choices for a phenomenal future.
COLLABORATION ~ EMPOWERMENT ~ SERVICE
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed,
citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
Following a community meeting hosted by Andy Shallal at Busboys & Poets in 2019, the TransformersDC was established to provide guidance, resources, and opportunities for District youth in Wards 7 & 8. The meeting began with conversations revolving around methods to reduce violence and drug use throughout our community, which progressed to offering a solution by supporting youth and underserved families, connecting them with mentorship, community support, and resources to help reduce opioid use and make positive decisions for their future. Following this mission, TransformersDC has served over 400 Washingtonians to help create a brighter future.
Unlike traditional programs, TransformersDC operates with a holistic approach, focusing on emotional, social, and educational growth. By offering a variety of programs centered in Wards 7 & 8 that are tailored to the specific needs of our participants, we are able to reach a broader audience and provide support in the areas they need it the most. We understand that real change comes from the inside out, which is why we nurture self-worth, confidence, and resilience in our participants, empowering them to not only survive but thrive.
Watch unity in action as the TransformersDC collaborators join one another in the singing of 'Lift Every Voice' to celebrate Black History Month.
This moment reminds us of the strength that exists throughout our Ward 7 & 8 community. Let's continue to uplift, inspire and empower!
